We have worked with non-profit and non-government organizations around the world helping teach their staff and members video skills
In 2022 we teamed up with The YOU in Poughkeepsie, NY for their summer program for young people in the area.
The YOU, Youth Opportunity Union, is an organization engaging the young people of Duchess County and providing them with a space to play, learn and grow. Founded by Gerry Laybourne, the founder of Oxygen Media and the person who made Nickelodeon a great success, asked us to work with her and The You to train the kids ot shoot, edit and produce their own video.
Working in conjunction with Spectrum News 1, we ran an intensive video story-telling bootcamp for 30 students, ranging in age from 12-18, giving them instruction on how to use their smartphones and iPhones to tell comoelling stories about their communities and their lives.
All too often, local news coverage flows only one way – from the local reporter to the community. And equally all too often, local TV news is focused on the bad things that happen in a neighborhood – fires, crime, automobile accidents. The good is often forgotten. By empowering local young people, we are able to empower the community to tell their own stories in their own voices, and at the same time teach valuable skills to the participants.
In just a few days, we were able to teach them to shoot professional video, script a story, edit and produce it. But more importantly we also taught them how to take control of the media’s coverage of their community and their lives.
