What time does class start each day and how long are the days?
Class starts promptly at 9:30AM each morning. Finish times can vary but generally the courses end around 6PM each day. Please make your travel arrangements/flights accordingly.
How are the days structured?
Each day starts with a lecture on some aspect of film-making, shooting, storytelling, etc. followed by a hands-on activity (i.e. field shooting or editing) where you will learn how to put the theory into practice.
In your first shoot, you will be focusing on using the disciplined shooting techniques learned on the first morning. Your goal will be to get comfortable with the camera in your hands and to capture the specific sequence of shots you’ve learned.
On the 4-Day course, your second shoot is your opportunity to apply the advanced techniques you will have learned on day 3. You’ll be making a more focused story based around a character. By the end of the course, you will have created two one-minute videos that you have shot and edited yourself.
We purposefully avoid handing out detailed agendas since production is a very organic process and it’s difficult to anticipate how quickly each class will be able to grasp and apply the concepts taught. Rest assured that while you are working hard to make your videos, we’ve got an eye on the clock and will get you where you need to be when you need to be there.
Do I need to pre-plan the stories I'll be filming during the course?
Yes you will need to do some pre-planning if you’re taking a course where you will be filming a story. We will send you all the details with the welcome letter when you sign up and our team will be able to give you advice if you have any questions.
Can I bring a friend or family member with me to the course?
Unfortunately it’s not possible to bring a friend or family member to the course with you however for those taking the 4-day course, it may be possible to bring a guest to the final screening. Please check with your instructor in advance of the final day.

What equipment will I need for the course?
For filming you will need a video camera or a smartphone. More and more people are choosing to use their smartphones for our courses and they work well for the training. If you are bringing a video camera please make sure you have practiced with it and are familiar with all the settings before you attend. Whether you are bringing a smartphone or a video camera please also ensure you have fully charged batteries and your battery charger. You should also make sure you have sufficient space on the hard-drive of your camera or smartphone for recording video.
For editing you’ll need a laptop that has the required editing software installed on it. Please inquire at the time of booking which editing software will be used during your chosen course. Your laptop should also have a port and the correct cable to connect your laptop to your video camera or smartphone. You’ll need a pair of headphones. A two-button mouse is highly recommended but not required. If you don’t already have the editing software, we recommend downloading a free trial prior to the course. The free trial generally lasts for 30 days so please download the software prior to attending the course and make sure it is working properly. You should also ensure that your laptop has sufficient hard-drive space and processor speed for editing video. Older laptops can have difficulty processing high definition video files. If you are short of hard-drive space you can bring an external hard-drive to plug into your laptop.
If you don’t have a laptop with the correct editing software for your course and would like to work with a different software this can usually be accommodated but please let us know when you sign-up so we can run through the support we would be able to give during the editing sessions.
Do I need to bring my own footage for the 1-Day Editing & Storytelling in Video course?
If you have footage for a story that you would like to work on during the course you should import it into Final Cut X and bring it with you. If you don’t have footage, we will be happy to supply you with footage for a story that you can use during the course. Please note that if you do use footage supplied by us, you will not be able to publish the story online after the training owing to rights issues. However you will be able to share it privately in order to show it to other people.
What should I pack?
Bring casual, comfortable weather-appropriate clothes, sunscreen and a hat, if desired. Most importantly, bring comfortable shoes. When out on shoots, you will be walking a lot.
When are breaks scheduled?
Because of the nature of the course, we don’t have set break times but we generally schedule a short coffee break during the morning and afternoon sessions when you can go out and get something to eat and drink. On filming days it will be best to take a lunch break prior to your shoot and on editing days we will have a scheduled break at the end of the editing instruction sessions.
Are meals provided during the course?
We provide bottled water and snacks during the course. For meals there are plenty of options very close to where the training takes place and our staff can recommend good places to go to eat.
Do you recommend accommodation?
We don’t recommend particular accommodations but we can certainly advise you on hotels near to the training.
For our New York courses, Midtown hotels can be expensive so if you’re looking for good value accommodation then we recommend trying Airbnb or one of the discount hotel booking websites.
If you have questions about hotels near where the training is held then please contact us and we’ll do our best to help.
