We Produce Television in an Entirely New Way:

  • Faster
  • Better
  • Far More Cost Effective

We have been in the TV Production business since 1994.  During that time, we have produced hundreds of hours of programming for cable and broadcast, all using new technologies and new technology paradigms.

Small Digital Cameras – The First Revolution

In 1994, Video News International, founded by Chairman and CEO Michael Rosenblum was instrumental in producing the very first television series using small, hand held DV cameras. This was TRAUMA, LIFE IN THE ER for TLC. Instead of using conventional betacam crews, directors, editors, producers, production assistants and so on, Rosenblum placed 4 DV-equipped VJs in hospital emergency rooms across the country.  The access and intimacy these cameras afforded, along with the massive savings in the cost of production sent Trauma Life in the ER to the top of the ratings charts for TLC, where it remained for an astonishing 10 years.  The program still airs, but the paradigm was even more powerful.

Soon VNI, and later NY Times TV, of which Rosenblum was both founder and President, began to produce a raft of cable series using the same technique. Paramedics, Maternity Ward, Labor and Delivery, Police Force, Code Blue… Hundreds and hundreds of hours produced in this way.

Laptop Edits  - The Second Wave

In 2005, a new technology again transformed the landscape of television production.  Editing software, once expensive and complex had become cheap, dependable and most important portable.  It was now possible to take edits into the field, and to edit as the show was produced.  This meant much more editorial control, faster turn around times and much less expensive budgets.

This second wave approach was first tried in a groundbreaking series for The Travel Channel called 5 Takes Europe.  In a remarkable series of 8 hours, 5 young filmmakers were sent to Europe for the summer. They were accompanied by a Rosenblum production crew of shooter/editors using small hand-held HD cameras and laptop edits.  They edited as they shot.  A conventional hour long cable reality/documentary show might take 18-20 weeks to produce.  For 5 Takes, each hour was produced in an astonishing 6 days.

The budgetary ramifications are obvious, but the technique also gave a far greater degree of control  over the production.  The greatest implications, however were for the Internet. Now it was possible to create websites that were truly interactive.  One might blog/vlog on a website related to the show on Tuesday and see the results on the air on Saturday. We had created a format called ‘Nearly Live’, and at a very low cost.

Since then, Rosenblum has produced many more series using this technique.  Among these, The Invisible Journey with supermodel Frederique van der Waal, City Guides, Tsunami Relief, 24 Hours in the City and many others.  And this is just the beginning of the revolution.
